Jeongbang waterfall in Jeju Island (정방폭포)

 

 Jeju Island, which has a different attraction from Seoul, is one of my favorite area in Korea. I used to visit Jeju Island 3~4 times a year to walk along the Olle trail. Jeju Island has many things to see, such as Mt. Halla, beautiful sea, various oreum (Jeju Island is called the "Oreum kingdom" because there are 368 kinds of oreum. It is a peak made from volcanic eruptions.) and so on. 

 

 Among them, I will introduce today is Jeongbang waterfall in the souther part of Jeju.

Jeongbang Waterfall

 

 Jeongbang Falls is one of the Jejudo Island’s top 3 falls, along with Cheonjiyeon Falls and Cheonjeyeon Falls. It is the only fall in Korea where waterfalls directly into the sea. The fall is 23m high and the two streams of the waterfall that fall down the black cliff create a thrilling sound and a wonderful view. Moreover, the steep cliffs and old pine trees around the fall create a picturesque view, and this view was chosen as one of Ten Scenic Sights of Yeongju with the name of “Jeongbanghapok.” According to legends, a man named Seobul came to the island in search of an elixir plant on the orders of China’s Qin Shu Huangdi a long time ago. Unable to find the elixir plant, he headed west to return to China and became captivated by the site of Jeongbang Falls, leading to him writing “Seobulgwacha’ on the cliff. However, these words have yet to be found in real life. It takes approximately 5 minutes to go down the stairs leading from the parking lot to the waterfall.

 

 You can check the closing time of entrance to the Jeongbang waterfall every day at the ticket office. If you plan to visit in the afternoon, be sure to check the closing time before entering. 

 

 

 It's not far from the ticket office to the waterfall, but the stairs are very steep, so you have to be careful not to slip.

 

 

 I visited in the hot summer and just watching the waterfall made me feel cool.

 

 I visited the waterfall after the rain in the morning so I could see the beautiful rainbow with a waterfall. What a piece of good luck!

 

 In front of the waterfall, the haenyeo are selling seafood. It is not that cheap, but eating seafood while looking at the waterfall is a really special experience and the taste of seafood is also good.

 

 

 

 If you are planning to visit Jeongbang waterfall, I recommend you visit the nearby Seogwipo maeil olle market as well. It is a traditional market in Jeju Island, similar to the Dongmun market near Jeju airport. It is smaller than the Dongmun market, but there are many different kinds of food to eat.
