Jeju Island is an island surrounded by the blue sea. That is why there are many different activities you can do in the sea. Among activities, the haenyeo experience is a special experience which you can try only in Jeju Island.

Before you read my post about haenyeo experience, I recommend you read the definition of a haenyeo in Wikipedia. Otherwise, it may be hard to understand why having a haenyeo experience in Jeju Island is meaningful and why it is so special.

Haenyeo - Wikipedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigation Jump to search Female occupational divers in the Korean province of Jeju Haenyeo (also spelled haenyo) (Hangul: 해녀; lit. sea women) are female divers in the Korean province of Jeju. Known for their i

It takes about 20 minutes to walk in from the bus stop to find this place. I recommend you visit here using Kakao map or Naver. As you know, Google map doesn't work well in Korea.

Every month, the time and number of times you can experience haenyeo vary. Because of the safety of people, they proceed in consideration of the situation in the sea. Usually, the haenyeo experience is held about 3 times a day. During my visit, I was able to experience it 3 times at 11 am, 1 pm and 4 pm. I made a reservation for 4 pm one on that morning.

Everything needed for the haenyeo experience and even toiletries are prepared there. Therefore, you only need to prepare your underwear and experience fee KRW 35000.

It is equipped with a variety of diving suits and flippers in various sizes so you don't have to worry about your size.

This place is more special because it is the only place on Jeju Island where you can experience haenyeo with real haenyeo, not a diver. There are about 300 people of haenyeo in this area. The sea is wider and more well preserved than other regions in Jeju Island, so there are more haenyeo. The haenyeo experience will be held at a turn among the haenyeo in Hadori.

Change clothes and warm up before going into the water, and slowly follow the haenyeo into the water. It sinks into the water because of the heavy back pendulum, but it is quite difficult to dive deeper than you might think. But the haenyeo are good at explaining how to do it in the water and they help you catch seafood. So, you will have a great time.

Traveling around Jeju Island, you can often see a restaurant that says 'Haenyeo-caught seafood'. The food in those restaurants is a little bit more expensive than other restaurants, but you will realize why after this experience. That's because haenyeo overcome pain and fear and catch seafood with difficulty.

Time flies faster than expected the haenyeo experience, which lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. Once you've had the experience, take out the seafood you've got in the net and it'll have twice as much fun.

The seafood you catch is boiled and prepared by haenyeo for you to eat while you take a shower. Eating your own seafood, not other people's, will give you a special experience.

Haenyeo kindly explains to you how to eat seafood as below video file. All you have to do is go enjoy yourself.

I recommend this place for those who:

- like nature

- want to experience fun outdoor activities

- have a plan to travel to Jeju Island

- want to visit the local place where is not a touristic place

- want to make a special memory

- like seafood
